Research

The Roberts Hand-Book of Artillery - This handbook was used to train artillerists for heavy and seacoast pieces. It contains a wealth of information!

U. S. Army Military History Institute - Extensive collection of works about the U.S. Army.

Battery B, First U.S. Artillery Lineage - The lineage of the first unit to occupy Fort Taylor. Traces the organization of the unit in 1812 to its current status and designation.

National Archives - This is an excellent source for photos and other information, but *be forewarned* that some of the photos are gruesome and may be unsuitable for viewing by very young children.

U.S. Corps of Topographical Engineers -

Missiles of Key West - This is the website detailing the Hawk missile defenses that ringed Key West in the 1960s. Excellent photos and information! The historian of the group, Richard Whitt, has been a great help to Fort Taylor.org with photos and information about Fort Taylor's service during the opening of the 20th century.

Thank You to military historian Richard Whitt and author William Gaines for information. Additional information came from the 1879 work entitled The History of the First Regiment of Artillery 1821-1876 compiled by Brevet Major William Haskin.

Reenactments

The Bone Island Buccaneers - The most feared pirate crewe of the Florida Keys! Don't cross swords with this group, because it will likely be the last crossing. However, you can easily win them to your side with a bottle of rhum and song. The Bone Island Buccaneers are the co-producers of the Fort Taylor Pirate Fest held the first weekend of December. They are also available for any gathering where you need pirates. Check out their CD, too!

Pirates In Paradise - A gathering for the Brethren of the Coast. This is an event produced at Fort Taylor the second week of December. It features all things piratical! The Florida Keys were a known haven for pirates during the Golden Age of Piracy and when Florida was under British control. What if these scurvy dogs encountered a company of British Royal Marines at Cayo Hueso who happened to be posted to the island?

Gentlemen of Fortune - An excellent web site to learn more about re-enacting the Golden Age of Pyracy. You'll see a lot of information about period correct clothing, weapons and much more. Highly recommended!!
